Cantonments of India

Cantonments were established by British Empire in its colonies, to set up military activities in the respective provinces. Barrackpore was the first cantonment built by the Britishers in India in 1772. Since then, Britishers set up a series of cantonments in various parts of the country. At present, there are 63 cantonment boards in the country. Pakistan has a large number of cantonments, which were part of former British India. Some of the oldest cantonments setup in British India, which are now part of India, are:
